Cast of Characters

The Grim has an interesting cast of characters. Check out this synopsis!

Jaycee Baynes: the heroine of our story. A firecracker who always does things on her own terms, Jaycee is quick-witted, relentless and endlessly devoted to those she loves.

Tina Roark, M.D.: the assigned case management doctor of Jaycee's rehabilitative therapy. Having studied and treated multiple clients with PTSD, Dr. Roark has developed a specialty with Jaycee's disorder. But she needs to gain Jaycee's trust to execute it...

Madeline (Maddy) Neville: the panic stricken best friend and "next room" neighbor to Jaycee. Constantly at her side, Maddy is both a sound ear and potential nuisance to our heroine.

Jac Bailey: another member of Jaycee's band of misfits. Jac, having resided at the psych ward the longest, seems less concerned with therapy and more with his best friend, Jaycee...and Hazel's chocolate chip cookies.

Giselle Craven: the newest member of the group and the most reserved. Still undiagnosed, Giselle seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

Aaron Porter: lover (and ex?) boyfriend of our heroine, Aaron wants nothing more than to remain at Jaycee's side. The question is...will she let him?

Antonio (Tony) Raye: a ghost. Well...sort of.

Hazel/Tai/Randi: the trio of nurses assigned to the rotation of care and supervision on Jaycee's resident floor. Each plays a significant part for our heroine, but Hazel bakes the cookies.

David Stewart, M.D.: director of the psych ward and Jaycee's supervising physician. He and Jaycee have a consistent love/hate relationship.

Ronald & Noah Baynes: father and son to Jaycee, respectively. Her ever-present motivation is to get back home to these two.

Author Q&A

With all the interviews while touring and fan questions I've received, it's become clear that there's a lot you seem to want to know about me and my writing process for The Grim. I want to be sure to satisfy your curiosity so I've included this short video of the most frequent and common questions I've been asked about the novel.  Mind you, I'm a much better writer than speaker!

Hazel's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Jac (no K), one of the main characters in my novel, loves chocolate chip cookies. The psych ward's main nurse, Hazel, brings in her infamous chocolate chip cookies for snack time daily, and Jac cannot wait to consume them. In spirit of Jac's natural affinity toward this sweet dessert, I've included Hazel's recipe. Try it out and make sure to tell me if you like them as much as Jac does!

2 cups plus 2 tablespoons (10 5/8 ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and cooled until warm
1 cup packed (7 ounces) light or dark brown sugar
1/2 cup (3 1/2 ounces) granulated sugar
1 large egg plus 1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1-1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1. Adjust the oven racks to the upper- and lower-middle positions and heat the oven to 325 degrees. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper or spray them with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt together in a medium bowl; set aside.

3. Either by hand or with an electric mixer, mix the butter and sugars until thoroughly blended. Beat in the egg, yolk, and vanilla until combined. Add the dry ingredients and beat at low speed just until combined. Stir in the chips to taste.

4. Roll the dough into desired size, spacing ½ inch to 2 inches apart based on the desired size of your cookies.

5. Bake until the cookies are light golden brown and the outer edges start to harden yet the centers are still soft and puffy, 15 to 18 minutes, rotating the baking sheets front to back and top to bottom halfway through the baking time. Cool the cookies on the sheets. Remove the cooled cookies from the baking sheets with a side metal spatula.

Psycho Thriller Challenge

I encountered a little problem with the embed code of the PowerPoint presentation I configured for this challenge.  There were media clips at certain intervals that were converted to pictures instead of the original video media.  If you still want to interact with the quiz, you can click the hyperlinks next to the quiz to view the video questions/answers as they correspond with the slides.
